Chapter Sixteen – Colleen

Colleen clutched her phone tightly in her hand as if she could crush it to dust. But it wasn’t her phone that had crumbled and fallen apart, it was her dream of a fresh start with a man like Morgan.

“Are you all right?” Morgan asked when she opened the door to him. “You look as if you have seen a ghost.”

The edges of her phone dug into her palm. Morgan had no idea how right he was. She wished she could unsee the photo that had appeared on her phone screen as she took off her boots and went to the kitchen to make a fresh pot of coffee.

But she couldn’t.

Damn those stupid social media apps that sent reminders of past memories. Memories that she’d finally buried during her stay here at Bear Creek Lodge.

“I’m fine,” she lied and hugged herself as she rebuilt the barrier between them one brick at a time. She shouldn’t have been so quick to tear it down and let him in.

“Fine.” Morgan’s eyes narrowed. She hadn’t convinced him.

“Yes.” She brushed her hand across her eyes. “It’s been a long couple of days and I’m tired.”

Her feeble excuse didn’t sit easily with Colleen, but she didn’t have the words to explain how she was feeling. How could she when she didn’t really understand it herself?

“Okay.” He nodded as he continued to scrutinize her. “Can I get you anything?”

“No, I’m fine.” There was that word again. Fine. But she was anything but fine. It was as if the air had been sucked from the cabin, leaving her breathless. “And anyway, you are on duty soon. Other people need your help more than me.”

“If you need my help,” he began, “I’m here for you. I want you to know that.”

She did. And that was why she planned to cut short her stay at Bear Creek Lodge. If she left in the next hour, she could outrun the coming snowstorm.

“You have enough to worry about. I can take care of myself,” she assured him. “I assume the call from your boss was about your shift. Is everything okay?”

She wanted to shift Morgan’s attention away from her. He’d soon forget all about her once she left.

Deep down, she knew that wasn’t true. The connection she felt worked both ways. Morgan had feelings for her. Feelings that ran deep. She’d seen it in his eyes, felt it in his touch.

But he was better off without her. Her emotional scars cut too deep, and she doubted they would ever heal. Morgan deserved better. He didn’t need a woman with so much baggage she was about to get buried beneath it.

“Some of the crew on call have been called out. My dad has volunteered to go along with them.” Morgan hovered on the porch, not wanting to leave and she hated herself for not inviting him in. But it was for the best. If he did want a romantic relationship, he should find someone else. It was for the best.
